Pharaoh Ramses II, who enslaved the Israelites, ordered the death of all the male children of the Hebrews, captives in Egypt, to prevent the growth of their race. At the time when the persecution raged with the greatest intensity, Jokebed, wife of Amran, of the tribe of Levi, gave birth to a son of extraordinary beauty. Unable to make up her mind to see him perish, she keeps him hidden, thanks to her admirable faith, for three months. But despairing of deceiving the surveillance of the persecutors any longer, she exposes him, crying, in a basket on the banks of the Nile. With her daughter Marie, she stands a short distance away, behind a clump of trees, contemplating what is to come. At this time, the Pharaoh's daughter; named Thermuthis, descending to the sacred river for her ablutions, sees the basket in the reeds and sends one of her servants to look for it. Moved with compassion, at the sight of the little crying child: “It is doubtless a child of the Hebrews,” she said. And Jokebed, having then shown herself, offered to serve as nurse. Not suspecting that God intended this child to be the liberator of Israel, Pharaoh allowed his daughter to adopt him, under the name of Moses, that is to say “Saved from the waters”.

Scene from Holy Scripture
Color cinematography by Pathé Fréres

This film, to which our color cinematography communicates its magic and its relief, is executed with the keenest touch of accuracy, follows the sacred texts, and recounts their poetic legend scrupulously. The Pharaoh, Ramses II, who reduced the Israelites to slavery, ordered the death of all the male children of the Hebrews, captives in Egypt, to prevent the growth of their race. At the time when the persecution rages most intensely, Jokobed, wife of Amran, of the tribe of Levi, puts in the world a daughter of extraordinary beauty. Unable to make up her mind to see him perish, she keeps him hidden, thanks to her admirable faith, for three months. Despairing of deceiving the surveillance of the persecutors any longer, she exposes him, crying, in a basket, on the banks of the Nile... With her daughter Marie, she stands at a short distance, behind a clump of trees , considering what is to come. At this moment, the Pharaoh's daughter, named Therauthis, a descendant of the sacred river for her ablutions, sees the basket in the reeds and sends one of her servants to look for it. Moved with compassion at the sight of the small crying child: "He is undoubtedly a child of the Hebrews", she said. And Jokebed, having then shown herself, offers to serve as nurse. Not suspecting that God destined this child to be the liberator of Israel, Pharaoh allowed his daughter to adopt him, under the name of Moses, that is to say "Saved from the waters."

A field
Ramses II, Pharaoh of Egypt, who reduced the Israelites to slavery, takes barbaric measures against them to prevent their growth. In a field are poor Israelite slaves working hard under the eyes of their tyrants, they are beaten and treated pitifully.
An ancient street.
ISRAELITE SLAVES: By order of Ramses II, you will throw into the Nile any boy who is born and only let the girls live. A soldier of the king informs all the Israelites of Ramses' decision; everyone is desolate. Other soldiers arrive snatching newborn sons from their mothers' arms and throwing them into carts. It's a heartbreaking spectacle. Children hug their parents for fear of being swept away too.
Miserable interior.
Desperate by Pharaoh's decision, Amran seeks to rescue the child God has given her from inevitable death. Amran, enters the humble abode, mad with despair because he knows that his child will have the fate of all the others. He takes his child in his arms, and presses him tightly to his chest; his wife, Jokebed questions him, he doesn't dare confess the terrible thing to her at first. The soldiers are about to arrive, it is absolutely necessary to remove the child from their eyes, the young sister is also listening, sorry.
Same street as 2nd scene.
Amran, come take a peek in the street to see what's going on.
Interior of the house
He warns that the time has come that the sole dates will certainly enter the house. He takes the child carefully and hearing a noise, he puts him in hemp bags hanging on the wall.
Exterior, same street as in 2. scene.
The soldiers are in front of the house and are going to enter it.
The interior.
The soldiers arrive, and the worried mother receives them and tells them to search but that there are no children. They search and even shake a hemp bag lying next to the one where the child is lying. The poor mother is ready to let out a cry but holds back. The soldiers, finding no trace, leave.
Street.
It is by faith that Moses, at his birth, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they did not fear the order of the king. The mother and the daughter, the mother holding her child in her arms, leave the house after having looked carefully so that she does not see anyone. The child is in a basket.
The banks of the Nile.
Jokebed entrusts his child to the reeds of the Nile. The two women arrive at the banks of the Nile, the mother gives the child to her daughter after pressing it to her heart. The young girl takes the child in her arms and descends slowly to the edge of the river, then she places the basket where the child is lying. FIRST SHOT of the girl having deposited the basket containing the child. Then, the young girl runs away with the mother.
The banks of the Nile.
Thermontis, daughter of Pharaoh, going down to the sacred river for her ablutions, sees the basket in the reeds. Pharaoh's daughter arrives, accompanied by her attendants through the brushwood surrounding the Nile. The young Thermontis, raises her veil to go down to the edge of the river. Surprised, she finds a basket containing the child. She takes it and shows it to her attendants.

Jokebed offers to feed the child the princess proposes to adopt. The young girl finds the child so beautiful that she wishes to adopt him. After a few moments, the child's mother arrives and offers to feed him. The princess is happy and takes him to present the child to his father.
The court of King Pharaoh.
Not suspecting that God intends this child to be the liberator of Israel, Pharaoh allows his daughter to adopt him under the name of Moses. The young princess arrives with her case to the court of her father Pharaoh, the mother holds the child in her arms. The young girl begs the child's pardon from her father and tells him that she wishes to adopt him, but he, at first, does not want to hear anything.
