Descriptions

In 1904 Abbot Mulsant and Abbot Chevalier went to the Holy Land to get some footage for their biblical lectures. At the time there they filmed also some scenes with Jesus as a child. These became "Palestine: Programme Biblique" and "In Nazareth". The whole project resulted in five documentary or artistic lectures. During the next year and a half they gave many lectures using this material. Later, when Gaumont became the distributer deal with Bonne Presse, that they included the films into their catalog for distribution sale, and here the title was "In Nazareth" for this part. They divided the film under the following titles: "The workshop", "Fountain of Nazareth", "Return of the Fountain", "The well", and "Evening closing in".

The complete collection of views that was brought back from Palestine was called "Aux pays de l'enfance du Christ".

The descriptions are translated from the catalogue "Projections Parlantes" from January 1908.
The Workshop. (L'Atelier)
Tradition, specifying a word from the Gospel, teaches us that Saint Joseph was a carpenter. The customs of the country place the shop where we work in a separate place from the home. Here is a worker from Nazareth. No workbench. He squats on the ground, resting the piece he is shaping on a tree trunk. Its instruments are rudimentary. An axe, a mallet, a drill bit driven by a bow, a saw which seems modern, but whose shape was known to the ancients. A child helps the worker, an ineffective help, he barely manages to touch us with his naive clumsiness.
Fountain of Nazareth. (Fontaine de Nazareth)
There is only one to which today's women, like the Virgin of old, come, several times a day, carrying the amphora. The weight is heavy, because the capacity is 12 to 15 liters. Also, get help from a neighbor to reload the load. Empty, the amphora is carried on the long horizontal axis, which means that, from behind, they have the appearance of a sphere.
The Return of the Fountain. (Le Retour de la fontaine)
The jug is as painful to unload as it is to load. The mother, in the process of grinding, in the mortar, the wheat, the meat and the spices which will make the material for supper, will lend her help to her daughter.
The Well. (Le Puits)
Winter storms fill a certain number of wells and as long as the summer heat has not corrupted the waters, they provide many services. The liquid is even cooler than that of the fountain. So this child impatiently waits for his grandmother to offer him an almost freezing cup.
The Evening Falls. (Le Soir qui tombe)
Return from work. The plow that we saw made in the workshop is very light. The roads are so bad that in the evening, when returning home, the plowman carries her on his back. When he arrives, he finds his wife preparing supper. She interrupts to offer the workers a well-deserved refreshment.
