Salome is the fruit of the incestuous love between her mother Herodias and King Herod Antipas. The prophet John the Baptist, after Christ's death, accuses the family of sacrilege by this union, leaving out for the time being all other lustful sins. For Herod this offense is the straw that overflows the camel and thus has the prophet imprisoned, contemplating killing him. Salome, on the other hand, remains completely enraptured by the prophetic and accusing words of the Baptist, so much so that she even falls in love with him. But John, as soon as he finds out, curses her even more than before; so Salome after staging the "Dance of the Seven Veils", claims from her father the head of the prophet. John the Baptist is beheaded and Salome is pervaded by a sexual ecstasy. Her father horrified by this has her killed.
