This is possibly the finest Japanese picture we have ever offered. Nikko is noted on account of the mausoleum of the family of Tokugawa Shoguns being located there. In the days of the old feudal government in Japan this family held for many years the highest position in the government. The grand religious procession takes place yearly in which the priests of the different temples and citizens take part. The costumes are very striking and indicate various orders or societies. The picture is a most excellent one in every particular.

Part of the Series "War In The Far East"
The great annual festival of the temples is held on the 1st and 2nd June. The sacred palanquins (Mikoski) containing the divine symbols are then borne in procession, when ancient costumes, masks and armour are donned by the villagers, old and young alike taking part in the display.
