The scene takes place in a poor interior of Breton fishermen, where the sick mother is lying in the alcove, while little Jeanne, aged six, takes care of her little brother in the cradle and attends to the care of the household. Jean, the father of the family is out of work. Going up the bank to return home, the fisherman recognizes in a silent boat a comrade busy with a mysterious task. The man explains that he is smuggling fish and invites his friend to help him. Tempted, Jean lets himself be carried away and the two men set to work, bringing back swollen nets of fish. But, behind them, suddenly, a sound of oars in a lapping of water, makes them flee distraught. Surprised by the gendarmes, Jean is caught and arrested while his accomplice jumps into the water and flees. Jean is thrown in prison. Little Jeanne does not lose confidence. She takes a beautiful notebook page, ink and writes: “Good God, bring back dad who is in prison, with bread and good remedies for mom” And she signs: little Jeanne. She throws her letter in the air. A schoolboy passing in the street receives the naive missive. He informs his father, the Count of Bersec, who works to get the unfortunate father of the family released and takes him into his service as a gamekeeper. Thus, thanks to little Jeanne, happiness and health returned to the house.
