As far as we know, the service on 31st August 1902 was nothing out of the ordinary, and it's hard to say if the large mass of people in the congregation reflects the importance of churchgoing to Edwardian society or whether the presence of a camera has proved a draw. The appearance of a boy drummer from the local regimental band catches the eye, as do the dummy-chewing babies.

Scenes at the beginning of a church procession in Warrington. (Synopsis) Replacement title (0.07). Slow pan left of an ornate church gateway (the buttresses of the church can be seen in the background and two gothic/Victorian houses stand either side of the gateway). A large group of children are gathered in front of the church - all dressed in their Sunday best (0.33). Jump. The children have gone or are standing to the side of the gateway as a disorderly group of policemen and boy cadets in full ceremonial walk through the gates to camera. A brass band is just visible in the background. The cadets and policemen line up in formation ready for the procession. The march off is not seen. Jump, the crowds follow the procession. Many of the crowd carry young children and lift them up to the camera as they pass (1.45mins). (Shotlist)
