This is a film recording adapted from Victor Hugos "Écrit au bas d’un crucifix" (Written at the bottom of a crucifix) in his "Les Contemplations"(Contemplations) together with a sound recording - so an early sound film (mentioned in Phono-Ciné-Gazette). Marked "Scène religieuse" in the Phonoscene catalog of Gaumont from 1908, and the image shows Christ's crucifixion.
The poem of Victor Hugo that the opera by Faure is based on, translated:
You who cry
Come to this God for he cries
You who suffer
Come to Him for He heals
You who cry
Come to this God for he cries
You who suffer
Come to Him for He heals
You who tremble
Come to Him
Come to Him for He smiles
You who tremble
Come to Him
Come to Him for He smiles.
You who pass
Come to Him for He abides
Because he remains
You who pass
Come to Him for He abides
You who pass
Come to Him for He abides
Because He remains.
